ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 3-09 Garrycastle 1-14

Last Saturday evening St Lomans travelled to Athlone to take on Garrycastle in what was the 2020 County Champions versus the 2019 County Champions. Garrycastle got the opening score through wing-back Jason Nugent. The Blues responded in the perfect manner through a Chris Gilbert goal after a brilliant pass from TJ Cox and Gilbert made no mistake with the finish. Garyycastle would level proceedings just before the first water break with points from Michael Monaghan and Ger Heneghan, respectively. Lomans Netted again shortly after the water break, a quickly taken free by Kelvin Reilly found Gilbert once again who finished with aplomb for his and Lomans’ second goal. Cathal Mannion then reduced the arrears to two for the hosts. Both sides traded scores with TJ Cox on target with a double. The Saints struck another blow on the stroke of half time, when David Whelan’s superb Crossfield pass found Gilbert who once again ghosted in behind the Garrycastle defence and completed a stunning first half hat-trick for the midfielder beating Shane Moran in the Garrycastle net with another well-taken goal. Alex Gardiner had the last word of the half pointing to leave the scores at 3-02 to 0-07 at the interval.

The Second half of play saw the teams once again exchange scores with Kelvin Reilly on target with two points, the first a fisted effort and the second an excellent score from range. Adam Kennedy then pointed for the Castle leaving a three-point deficit. The two sides continued to exchange blows pointing twice each. For the Visitors Tristan Graham was on target with an excellent point off the outside of his boot, before Peter Foy produced the point of the match with a beautiful strike from distance. TJ Cox then pointed after good build up play from Danny McCartan and Jack Geoghegan. Cox then put five between the sides with a long-range free. Garrycastle reduced the arrears two four through Kennedy after the full forward claimed a mark. TJ Cox’s mazy run and excellent point put the Blues back up by five. Corner-back Matthew Guiheen brough the gap back to four going into injury time. In the dying moments Garrycastle were given a contentious penalty for a foot-block. Gardiner dispatched the penalty leaving Lomans with a slender one-point lead. Referee Declan Nugent then blew the full-time whistle, the Visitors ending as one-point victors in an entertaining game of football.

For the Blues David Whelan and Paddy Dowdall were superb in defence covering every blade of grass and winning several turnovers. Oisín Hogan put in an assured performance at centre-back. TJ Cox was excellent at centre-forward scoring five points on the night. Kelvin Reilly was superb in full-forward, Reilly in truth could play anywhere on the pitch and put in a good performance. However, it is hard to argue with Chris Gilbert for man of the Match, the Midfielder’s first half contribution of three goals was the difference, the old adage goals win games proved correct on this occasion! Declan Kelly’s men face the Downs in two weeks’ time with date and time to be confirmed.

Conor Cochrane pounced on a mis-queued short kick out and finished into an empty net to see Lomans extend their lead. Senior Girls:

Our Senior Ladies began their Div 1 League campaign yesterday evening with a 3-12 to 1-07 loss away to The Downs. The scoreline in no way reflects the competitiveness of the game, in which an incredibly young St Lomans outfit (the starting team included 6 girls from our U16 team) really put it up to the home team. With 20 minutes to go, only a point separated the teams. But ultimately the greater experience and physical strength of the home team was the difference.
