Reaching Out Magazine 2024

                  Reaching Out Magazine 2024

The 28th annual edition of Tinryland’s parish magazine “Reaching Out” will be on sale at the weekend and is available from St. Joseph’s Church, Tinryland, Raths Londis Pollerton Road, Tinryland G.A.A Club or direct from the editor Maureen Byrne at a cost of €7.

This year’s bumper edition features a host of interesting articles, from regular and new contributors, of happenings past and present in the parish.

One of the highlights of the year gone by was the photographic exhibition for Heritage week “Making Connections - Tinryland Past and Present”, which took place over three days at the end of August. This event won the County Carlow Award for Heritage week and is widely covered in Reaching Out 2024.

Regular contributor Liam Byrne profiles Tinryland native Michael Kehoe, who was a former colleague of his at Carlow Sugar factory while other interesting contributions come from John Monahan who writes about a murder that was committed in Castletown in 1918, Ronnie Shorten who writes about her memories of Linkardstown, Pat Hayden who recalls Tullow Street in the 1950s and Declan Grogan who writes about early motoring in the locality. Tom Byrne, originally from the parish, provides an amusing short story, while Jim Deane writes a very informative piece on Pat Kane (Padraig O’Catháin) and his fight for independence.

There is also a photographic feature in this year’s publication of the Tinryland Dramatic Society who staged numerous plays in the Long Hall in Tinryland in the years before television.

Sport as usual is well catered for with the hugely successful Bennekerry/Tinryland Ladies team, who won Carlow and Leinster titles and reached the All- Ireland final in Croke Park, featuring extensively as is the hugely successful South East Sevens GAA tournament that was held over three weekends in June and July and attracted over 90 club teams to Tinryland GAA club.

“Reaching Out 2024” also features reports from Tinryland N.S., Tidy Towns, Tinryland Park and informs us about the new Audio Guide that is available on the areas’s history and heritage.

Celebrations and achievements are also featured with Kate Morgan winning an Ireland Chair of Poetry Award, Keeva Delaney taking 3rd place in Europe as the Lions Young Ambassador together with graduations and weddings that took place this year.

There are also Christmas messages from Bishop Denis Nulty and the priests of the parish.

Congratulations to the editor Maureen Byrne and Clem Delaney on design and the large number of contributors for producing another gem which should provide a relaxing read and a nice stocking filler for the festive season.
