St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 23/09/2024:
Minor Boys Championship Semi-final:
St Lomans Mullingar 2-07 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-15
Last Sunday our minor boys’ 2024 campaign came to an end in Springfield. A determined blues’ team travelled to their neighbours knowing the hosts were heavy favourites, having won this competition the previous year. However, Tony Plunkett’s side were determined to cause an upset and brought a great intensity to the match, particularly in the opening quarter.
The saints raced into a three point lead with three fabulous points from Eoin Meehan. The first a long range free, the second a well claimed and converted mark and the third an excellent strike on the spin. Disappointingly though, the away side wouldn’t score for the remainder of the half, with Shamrocks kicking the next five to take a two-point lead into the second period.
The home side were well on top at the start of the second half and extended the lead with a further three points. Lomans were given a lifeline when Oisin O’Hara disposed the Shamrocks goalkeeper with an excellent tackle and managed to find the net to set up an exciting last twenty minutes. The sides then traded scores with Meehan extending his tally. Then came a disastrous five minute period where the green half of Mullingar hit 1-04 without reply to put the game beyond all doubt.
The Blues didn’t lie down though and responded well with three unanswered scores courtesy of Sean Plunkett, John Casey and Sean Hayes. Two further shamrocks lead increased the deficit and it could have been more had it not been for an excellent penalty save from Callum Butler Dolan in the Lomans goal. Eoin Meehan netted late on with a well-taken goal to restore some pride but it was not to be the visitor’s day as they ended up five point losers.
Mullingar Shamrocks will probably feel they should have won the game by a bigger margin having kicked several wides but on the other hand the saints missed two goal chances which could have swung the match in their favour. All in all five points was probably a fair margin of victory for Shamrocks who will be keen on winning a second minor championship in a row. Huge credit must be given to our lads who significantly improved on last year’s showing and died with their boots on. There’s no doubt that many of these lads will feature for our adult teams in 2025 and in the coming years with some great talent on show.
On the day John Casey, Sean Byrne, Sean Plunkett and Oisín O’Hara all acquitted themselves very well. However, there’s no doubt that sharpshooter Eoin Meehan was the best performing player in a blue jersey contributing 1-04 from a total 2-07. Well done to the entire panel for the hard work that was put in throughout the year. Finally big thanks to the management team of Tony Plunkett, David Goeghegan, Joe Matthews, David Maleady and Tosh Keena for devoting so much of their time to the lads this year. Make no mistake, the future is still bright in Lomans.
