St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 02/09/2024:

Village Barn Ladies Senior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-16 Garrycastle 1-07

Last Thursday our senior ladies continued their winning form with a comfortable win over Garrycastle in Lakepoint Park. Vicky Carr opened the scoring after a patient move, the visitors hit back with two quickfire points, but it would be the only time they lead for the entire match. Ciara Blundell pointed either side of Meabh O’Hara’s point in response before the away side halved the deficit at the far end. Katie Kilmurray was on the scoresheet either side of Lucy McCartan’s first score of the evening to get the Mullingar side motering.

McCartan then found herself through on goal and found the net after rounding the goalkeeper, having been previously denied twice prior to this. The Shannon siders didn’t wilt and responded to take advantage of some slack defending for a quickfire 1-01. Ellen Kilmurray had the last word of the half with the point of the match from an extremely acute angle, leaving the blues four clear at the interval.

The second period saw the saints slowly pull away, starting with four consecutive scores through Kilmurray, Carr, Blundell and McCartan. Garrycastle did briefly reply but the lead was further extended by Kilmurray, a Blundell double and a stunning point from Paige Matthews. The Athlone side got the final two scores of the match leaving the winning margin at nine points in favour of the saints.

In truth Ciaran Kilmurray’s side were comfortable victors but were also sloppy at times particularly just before half time. The hosts struggled against an organised Garrycastle defence which visibly frustrated Lomans. On a forgettable evening of football, there were several solid performances particularly from Lucy McCartan and Ciara Blundell up front. In defence skipper Katie Dunne lead by example. Overall though Ellen Kilmurray was probably the most consistent player over sixty minutes and sealed it with that score in the first half.

Next up is Killucan away who have been very competitive thus far and will provide stern opposition. Lomans will be keen to sign off with two victories and will hope to maybe top the group if other results go their way.
