     Tinryland G.F.C. Club Notes 7th July 2024

The hugely successful South East sevens tournament that attracted over ninety teams to our club over the past 3 weekends finished up on Saturday and Sunday last with the staging of the Cora Townsend and Ned Hayden Cups.

In the Cora Townsend girls U12 competition on Saturday last 15 teams from 8 counties participated with victory in the Cora Townsend cup going to Laois club St. Conleths who defeated Dublins Ballinteer/ St. Johns in the final. Padraig Townsend son of the late Cora Townsend presented the Cora Townsend cup to St. Conleths captain Hayley Ryan.

Liam Townsend husband of the late Cora presented the shield to Naas captain Libby Walsh after the Kildare club had defeated Carlow’s Rathvilly in the final.

Sixteen club teams from 9 counties took part in the Ned Hayden boys U12 tournament on Sunday and after a great competition Moorefield from Newbridge emerged as cup winners. Moorefield defeated a very good Ballyhogue team in the final. Conor Byrne a great-grandson of the late Ned Hayden presented the Ned Hayden cup to Moorefield captain Charlie Wolfe.

The Ned Hayden shield final was contested between Baltinglass and Bagenalstown Gaels with the Wicklow side emerging as winners. Declan Hayden grandson of Ned Hayden presented the shield to Baltinglass captain Daniel Dalton 

At the presentation ceremony Tinryland chairman Bernard Mullen complimented all 94 teams that took part in this year’s South East sevens competition and he singled out tournament director Peter Scully and his team for their hard work in completing the tournament bang on schedule after 220 games over the 3 weekends.

Three teams from our club were in action in the past week with our U18 team successful away to Rathvilly on Monday last on a score of 2-10 to 1-5. Our U14 team were at home to O’Hanrahans on Wednesday last with the Carlow town team winning by 9 points.

Tinryland U16s were away to Michael Davitts in Paul Monaghan Park Ballinaboley on Thursday with the boys in blue and white winning on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-9. Goals in either half from Macdara Deane and Eanna Dunican were the catalyst for this victory while there were good performances also from Ollie Walsh, Mikey Byrne, Callum O’Brien-Murphy, Jamie Doyle and Cian McNamara.

The U16 team will be at home to our neighbours Palatine on this coming Thursday 11th July at 7 p.m. while our two U12 teams will be away to Bagenalstown on Saturday next 13th July in McGrath Park at 2 p.m. The next game for our minor U18 team will be a home fixture against Kildavin-Clonegal on Monday 15th July at 7 p.m.

Tinryland G.F.C. extends sympathy to the Curran family and our football chairman Jimmy Curran on the passing of Mrs Bridget Curran who was laid to rest in Tinryland cemetery on Tuesday last.

The club lotto jackpot currently stands at €7900 and can be played online via the club force app or by purchasing a ticket for the Monday draw from any committee member. Lucky dip winners on Monday last were: Liam Delaney, Trish Purcell, Eamonn Brennan and Ella Nolan Kildavin.
