   Tinryland G.F.C. Club Notes June 30th 2024

The second weekend of the South East sevens tournament attracted 31 teams to Tinryland Gaa club on Saturday and Sunday last. In the girls U14 tournament for the Tommy O’Neill cup and shield 15 teams from 8 counties battled it out in the worst of the weekends weather and after 35 exciting games Carlow clubs Rathvilly and Palatine won the cup and shield respectively. Grainne Murtagh daughter of the late Tommy O’Neill presented the Tommy O’Neill cup to Rathvilly captain Lauren Kehoe and the shield to Palatine captain Aishling Connolly. At the presentation ceremony Carlow Gaa safety and facilities officer Brian O’Neill paid tribute to the late Tommy O’Neill who served his club and county for over half a century.

The boys U14 tournament on Sunday was blessed with better weather and attracted 16 teams from 8 counties. At the end of another exciting and efficiently run event for the Peenie and Mick Whelan cup and Shield Ballymun Kickhams emerged as cup winners defeating Baltinglass in the final. Kildavin-Clonegal kept the Carlow flag flying by winning the Peenie and Mick Whelan shield defeating Waterford club Gaultier in the final.  Ballymun captain Liam Boyle received the Whelan cup from Peter and Pat Whelan with the player of the match award going to Leon Aston Castra from the Dublin club with that presentation performed by Rita Whelan.   Kildavin Clonegal captain William O'Reilly was presented with the Whelan brothers shield by Breda O’Leary with the player of the match award going to the Wexford Border clubs Oran Doyle.  Once again Co. board officer Brian O’Neill gave a nice outline of the history of both Whelan brothers and their contribution to both club and county.

At the beginning of both tournaments this weekend a 30 second round of applause was held in memory of the late Michael O’Muircheartaigh who had visited Tinryland for 3 major events over the past 40 years. The South East sevens tournament will wind up on this coming weekend when 32 U12 teams from 11 counties will compete for the Cora Townsend and Ned Hayden cup and shield.

Teams from the club had success in the past week with the minor team defeating Fenagh on Monday last and the U16 team winning against St. Patricks on Thursday. Bennekerry-Tinryland senior ladies had a comfortable win over St. Annes on Thursday and have now qualified for the knock out stages of the league. Players from BT are also part of the Carlow ladie’s team that has qualified for the All- Ireland junior semi-final.
