Club notes

    Tinryland G.F.C. club notes 24th June 2024

The first of three huge weekends in our club was successfully completed on Sunday last when the South East sevens U16 girls and boys tournament was run off in brilliant sunshine.

30 club teams from 14 different counties battled it out over the 2 days for the Mary Dwyer cup and shield and the Pat Doyle cup and shield. At the end of 2 days of intense competition Portlaoise defeated fellow Laois club St Brigids to win the Mary Dwyer girls cup with Wexfords Shelmaliers winning the Mary Dwyer shield defeating Louth club Newtown Blues in the final.

The local Bennekerry/Tinryland team had a very good girls tournament reaching the cup semi-final where they lost out to eventual runners up St. Brigids

Fifteen boy’s teams competed for the Pat Doyle cup and shield on Sunday and there was a big local interest with the host club Tinryland reaching the cup final where they lost out by two points to Sarsfields of Kildare. In the Pat Doyle shield competition Mount Leinster Rangers lost out by the minimum margin to Ballylinan from Laois. A feature of this years South East sevens was a fully computerised information system where all participants and their supporters could check the progress of the tournament on an app on their smart phones. This resulted in a huge level of efficiency with over 70 games completed within the designated time scale.

The South East sevens tournament continues on this coming weekend when former Tinryland and Carlow Co. Gaa secretary Tommy O’Neill will be remembered with the first staging of the U14 girl’s tournament on Saturday while former Tinryland legends Peenie and Mickey Whelan will be honoured in the boys U14 event on Sunday. Next weeks events have attracted an entry of 16 girls and 16 boy’s teams. The 3rd installment of this popular event will take place on the opening weekend in July when Cora Townsend and Ned Hayden will be remembered in girls and boys U12 competitions.

Tinryland U18 team will be in action at home to Fenagh on this evening Monday 24th June at 7 p.m.

On this coming Thursday 27th June Tinryland U16 team will host St Patricks in Rathcrogue at 7 p.m.

The club lotto jackpot currently stands at €7700 and can be played online via the club force app or by purchasing a ticket for the Monday evening draw from any committee member.

Last weeks lucky dip winners were: Tina O’Reilly, Tom Delaney, Brian Deane and Liam Fitzpatrick.
