S.F.L. Division 1 and Andy Murphy Shield final
Palatine 1-18 Tinryland 1-13 A great start and strong finish helped Palatine hoover up the league points and also retain the Andy Murphy shield against the home side at Rathcrogue on Sunday evening.
In a game played in ideal conditions on Tinryland’s old pitch it was the eventual winners who decorated the scoreboard first with 3 unanswered points from Andrew Kehoe, Shane O’Neill and the player of the match award winner Josh Egan.
Tinryland’s best player Shane Redmond who gave a fine display of high fielding throughout opened his team’s account in the 10th minute after fine play from Sean Murphy and Maurice Lawler.
Palatine then extended their lead with a further hat trick of points from Josh Egan, Shane O’Neill and Andrew Kehoe. Tinryland woke from their slumbers scoring further points from Maurice Lawler from a free won by Paddy Regan and Lawler again from play following great play by Shane Redmond. The closing stages of the opening half saw the men from Bennekerry parish extend their advantage via Shane O’Neill and Josh Egan with Paddy Regan capping a good performance for the home side with a wonderful individual point on the stroke of half time. Half time score Palatine 0-8, Tinryland 0-4.
Palatine began the 2nd half in similar fashion to the first and they had 3 more points on the board by the 33rd minute via Padraic Kelly, Cillian Duff and Andrew Kehoe (free).
Tinryland then enjoyed a purple patch for the next 15 minutes scoring well worked scores from one of their outstanding players Maurice Lawler who gave an exhibition of point taking together with Padraig Townsend Mark Lawlor, and Matthew O’Toole who brought the teams level with 18 minutes remaining. Palatine introduced Jason Kane and David Kehoe into the fray entering the final quarter and they started to edge ahead once again with well worked point scoring from Shane O’Neill, Stephen Reilly, Josh Egan and Andrew Kehoe. Leading by 4 points with 6 minutes remaining Palatine were rocked back to reality when Tinryland conjured a penalty via Bobby Doyle which was despatched in clinical fashion by Maurice Lawler but It was the eventual winners who finished strongly with an Andrew Kehoe point and a goal from Finbarr Kavanagh that put the game out of reach of the gallant home side. The final scores in this most enjoyable encounter were a Pal. point from Josh Egan and another Maurice Lawler point from a free for Tinryland.
After the game Tinryland chairman Bernard Mullen thanked all who had attended to create funds for Carlow Hospice with the man of the match award being presented to Josh Egan by Michael Murphy and the Andy Murphy shield going to Palatine captain Finbarr Kavanagh from the late Andy Murphy’s youngest son John.
