Match Report

S.F.L. Division 3

          Tinryland 3-7                   Asca 2-10

Tinryland and Asca shared the spoils in a competitive S.F.L. division 3 game at Rathcrogue on Saturday last. For long periods in this game the away side held the upper hand racing into a 6- point lead by the 20th minute courtesy of well taken points from Ben Doorley 2 frees, Shane Noonan (2), Conor Byrne (2) and the lively Mark O’Brien. Tinryland’s opening point came from the boot of Jamie Walker in the 8th minute after a great delivery from Padraic Whelan but it took another 12 minutes before the home side scored again when Shay McCullough lofted over a long- range beauty. Tinryland had been awarded a penalty in the 16th minute but Jamie Walker missed the target as did Ben Doorley who missed an open goal for Asca 6 minutes earlier. McCulloughs point in the 20th minute was the catalyst for a mini revival by the home team and they finished the half with a flourish scoring 2 further points via Bobby Doyle and Padraic Whelan with Doorley closing the first half scoring for the sky blues with another well taken point. Half time score Asca 0-8 Tinryland 0-4.

Asca were first out of the blocks on the resumption when midfielder Bryan Jackson slotted over a point before Jamie Walker kept Tinryland in contact when he raised a white flag 2 minutes later.

The small number of spectators present were then treated to a brilliant individual goal from Asca’s Mark O Brien in the 38th minute which extended his teams advantage to 7 points.

Padraic Whelan kept the home side in contact when he converted a free in the 51st minute after a long scorless period with Asca shutting up shop to protect their 6- point advantage. Tinryland threw the kitchen sink at their parish neighbours at this stage and were rewarded with 2 quickfire goals in the space of 3 minutes from Luke Broderick and Glenn Doyle which completely changed the game and it looked like the home side had weathered the storm and were pushing on for victory. Asca responded immediately and Tinryland goalie Chris Townsend was forced to bring off a world class save. This inspired his Tinryland team mates and as the clock ticked into stoppage time Bobby Doyle crashed the ball past Asca keeper William Long to put Tinryland ahead for the first time in this absorbing match. Asca then responded immediately and Bryan Jackson was on hand to crash the ball past Chris Townsend after a number of defensive lapses by Tinryland. Asca then looked like they had won the league points when Conor Byrne slotted over a point as the clock showed 6 minutes of injury time but with one last attack Tinryland won a free and Padraic Whelan rescued a league point for Tinryland.

Outstanding for the home team were goalkeeper Chris Townsend, Conall McGuire, Eoin Hosey, Glenn Doyle, Padraig Townsend, Padraig Whelan and Shay McCullough.

Asca’a most prominent players were Mark O’Brien, Bryan Jackson, Eoghan Evisson, Ben Doorley, Shane Noonan and Conor Byrne.
