S.F.L. Div. 1
Old Leighlin 3-13 Tinryland 0-9
Seven days after enjoying a comfortable win over Rathvilly a depleted Tinryland were well beaten by Old Leighlin in round 2 of the S.F.L Div. 1 at Rathcrogue on Friday. This game was over as a contest by half time as the men from Molaise park clinically took all 3 goal chances presented to them while the home side squandered as many chances in the opening 30 minutes. Tinryland could only muster 18 players for the warm up and when Rory Doyle pulled up before the throw in Tinrylands woes were further amplified.
The winners were first on the scoresheet when full forward Seamus Kinsella raised a white flag after 60 seconds before 2 quick points from Tinryland’s best player Cormac O’Brien edged the home side briefly ahead. A point from a 45 from Old Leighlin goalie Stephen Scallan equalised matters by the 6th minute and when Seamus Kinsella converted a free 2 minutes later Old Leighlin hit the front and were never headed thereafter. In the 19th minute the Old Leighlin men scored their first goal when corner forward James Dowling rattled the Tinryland net and 4 minutes later Seamus Kinsella repeated the dose to put his side 8 points up. The closing stages of the opening half saw the eventual winners consolidate their lead with a further goal via David Bambrick while O’Brien added a further 2 points for Tinryland to leave the half time scoreboard reading Old Leighlin 3-9 Tinryland 0-5. It could have been much closer in that half as Tinryland missed 2 gilt edged goal chances with the ball rebounding off the cross bar from a Bobby Doyle shot before Old Leighlin immediately went upfield to score their 3rd goal from Bambrick.
On the resumption Tinryland were further depleted when Conor O’Toole had to retire and the home side also lost Shane Redmond through injury in the second half. That half was a much closer affair with both teams only managing 4 points each with Mark Lawlor scoring a beauty for Tinryland followed by another from Michael Hosey. Bobby Doyle and Cormac O’Brien were the other Tinryland second half scorers with Old Leighlin also scoring 4 points via Shane Dooley, Seamus Kinsella (2) and Padraig Coughlin.
Old Leighlin will be back in league action on Friday 8th March at home to Palatine while Tinryland will be away to Eire Og on the same day.
