Stryve U20 (B) Tinryland 1-16 Ballon 1-6
Tinryland U20’s opened their Stryve U20 championship on a winning note with a comfortable win in the end against a dogged home side at James Morris Park on Sunday evening.
Tinryland were first on the scoreboard when the lively Conor Carew slotted over the bar in the 3rd minute after good play by Matthew Gleeson. That lead was doubled 2 minutes later when Jody Doyle-Hutton pointed after good work by Conor Carew. The home side then responded with an excellently worked goal from full forward Kevin Maher in the 9th minute and a minute latter Ballon were 2 points up when corner forward Danny Gibson slotted over a point. Mid-way through the half Jody Doyle-Hutton raised a green flag when he crashed the ball past Ballon goalie Cian Byrne after more good play by Cillian Fagan and Sean Murphy. The sides were level in the 16th minute when Ballon centre forward Evan Corr raised a white flag but Tinryland’s response was swift with a wonderful point from Tinrylands centre forward Conor Carew after great play by Tinrylands young player of the year Mark Mullen. The home side then suffered a double blow when 2 black cards were issued for a foul and dissent but it took the eventual winners 4 minutes to make their advantage work with 3 unanswered points from Conor Carew, Luke Broderick and Cillian Fagan. The latter score was a thing of beauty and came after excellent defensive play by one of Tinryland’s best players Cian McGuire. Half Time score Tinryland 1-6 Ballon 1-2
With their full compliment back Ballon were expected to respond in a major way but Tinryland with Vivian Nixon now on the field after replacing the injured Paddy Walshe were first to score with a point from Jody Doyle-Hutton. Great play by Michael Hosey, Alex Farrell and Kyle Holden set up Conor Carew for another Tinryland point before Ballon responded with a successful free from Evan Corr. Kyle Holden and Ballon wing back Ben Goodwin then traded points as the game entered the final quarter with Tinryland leading by 7 points. The latter stages saw Ballon throw the kitchen sink at the Tinryland defence but some superb play from goalie Conall McGuire, his brother Cian together with Matthew Gleeson, Mark Mullen and Michael Hosey kept the home team at bay limiting them to 2 further points while Tinryland went into overdrive in that period tagging on a further 5 points via Cillian Fagan, Luke Broderick, Conor Carew, Fagan again and sub. Peter Whelan.
Tinryland will be back in action on Saturday next 2nd December with a home game at 6 p.m. against Askea while Ballon will play Kildavin-Clonegal in the 2nd round of games
