St Lomans GAA Club Notes 30/10/2023:
Under 16 Girls Division 1 Championship Final:
St Lomans Mullingar 6-13 Garrycastle 3-08
St Lomans Mullingar secured their third under 16 title in a row with an emphatic victory over Garrycastle last Wednesday night in Lakepoint Park. Aislinn Kelly opened the scoring for the visitors in the first minute, but it was one way traffic after that. Katie Kilmurray and Grainne Cleary pointed either side of a goal from Keelin Burke to give the blues a lead.
Garrycastle reduced the arrears with a point from play but this would be their last score of the half. Two goals from Katie Kilmurray, as well as a Hannah Hogan goal increased the lead followed by points from Maddie Mulderry, Kate McDonnell along with doubles from Grainne Cleary and Katie Kilmurray saw the game all but over at the interval.
Shannon Breslin opened her account for the saints at the beginning of the second half. The visitors to their credit fought back and never gave up, a double from Kelly followed by two quick goals from Eve Murphy and Amelie Henson reduced the arrears. The hosts hit back with a Kilmurray free followed by a point from play courtesy of Maddie Mulderry. Katie Kilmuarry quashed any thoughts of a Garrycastle comeback with a stunning goal off her left foot. The sides then traded scores with Kate McDonell and Amelie Henson on target for their respective sides.
The away side continued to plug away and decreased the gap with a goal from Libby McHugh followed by a double from Hazel Donegan. McDonnell increased her tally for the Mullingar side before Grainne Cleary got in on the goalscoring act for a sixth goal and the last of the night. Donegan got the last score for her team, but it was a mere consolation as Lomans ran out comfortable winners.
It must be said, it’s quite unfortunate that an under 16 division 1 final was played under lights. St Lomans had very little time to celebrate and Garrycastle had to make the long trip home where they would not be back until all hours on a school night. It would perhaps be an idea to have this on a weekend in a neutral venue (rather than tossing for home advantage), to promote ladies’ football.
However, a big well done to every single one of our under sixteen girls who worked so hard all year for their title and the victory was fully deserved. Hard luck to Garrycastle who never gave up and will no doubt be a threat at this level next season following their strong showing in the under 14 final. Also, a speedy recovery two Garrycastle players who suffered a nasty collision in the first period.
On the night Lomans were super all over the park. With all players contributing to a great team performance, the likes of Aoibhe Hogan, Eve Scally and Eimear Donnan impressing in defence. Jayne Charles dominated midfield. Kate McDonnell, Maddie Mulderry and Grainne Cleary were all super up front. Player of the match Katie Kilmurray showed her class as usual with a final tally of 3-04. A big thanks to the management team of Stephanie Kilmurray, Niall Scally and Therese Hogan for their help with the team this year.
This team has several players who will no doubt be making their senior debuts next year (if they haven’t already done so). A strong showing at all underage levels gives encouragement to our senior team for the future. After the final whistle in the lashing rain, the cup was presented to Lomans captain Aoibhe Hogan who lifted the trophy aloft and saw a sea of blue celebrate their triumph.

Under 15 Boys Division 1 Championship Final:
St Lomans Mullingar 2-06 Shandonagh 4-11
On bank holiday Monday our under 15 side made the short trip to the downs to take on Shandonagh in a highly anticipated encounter which would decide the championship for 2023. Heavy rain lead difficult conditions for football but the pitch in Kevin Molloy Park held up very well. Shandonagh opened the scoring, but the saints responded well with excellent points from Conor Casey and Ben Smith. Smith found the net moments later when he cut out a back pass and rounded the keeper to finish into an empty net. Shandonagh hit back in emphatic fashion through a goal from Josh Scahill followed by a further 1-02 from his brother Will. Cian Matthews hit back for the blues on the stroke of half time to leave a goal between the teams at the interval.
Scahill increased the Shandonagh lead in the second half, shortly followed by a point from Stephen McWade to increase the deficit to five points. Lomans hit back through through fine points from Conor Casey and Keelan Reilly. Scahill responded with a free, but Conor Maleady found the net at the other end with a brilliant goal to get Lomans right back in the contest. Scahill once again pointed from a free, but it was quickly cancelled out by a Shane Winsdor placed ball to leave the minimum between the sides with fifteen minutes to go. Unfortunately, this was to be their last score, Shanodnagh romped home in the final quarter hitting the blues with a sucker punch and ran out deserving eleven-point winners.
There was nothing between either side until the final quarter and the final deficit maybe slightly harsh on the Lomans lads but at the same time it was clear Shandonagh were the better side and were tormented by Stephen McWade, Josh Scahill and particularly Will Scahill. However, it must be said that it has been a great year for this group and all of them have put in a trojan effort in 2023. Absolutely no doubt that these lads will be there or thereabouts in the coming years, and many have future senior potential. Well done to the management team of James Brady, David Maleady, Derek Devine and Pat Layde for all their hard work with the team this year. Finally, congratulations to Shandonagh on their victory.
