Borris-Ileigh’s U19 team played host to Nenagh Eire Og for round 3 of the North A championship on Wednesday, the 26th of July. Borris were coming into this game without a win which was in large part due to lack of numbers so far in the competition but were able to field a strong outfit with a large retention of the players that won the county title last year. Nenagh were the quicker out of the blocks however when they began the game with a 1-1 burst before Borris started to look threatening with a half forward line looking like aerial threats which led to Paddy McCormack opening the scoring with two frees before the number 10 reacted quickest to a Tom Delaney sideline to score from the stand side but Nenagh failed to wilt and matched the scoring efforts with Tipp Minor captain Sam O’Farrell bossing proceedings from centre back and facilitator of drive forward runs through the middle, the result a 1-4 to 3 point advantage for the visitors after 9 minutes. Paddy Mc continued to be the sole scorer for Borris as he showed versatility of shot making with a 65’ quickly followed by a clean cut sideline, Nenagh however maintaining a sizeable gap after 16 minutes with a 1-7 to 5 point advantage. Borris then went into a phase of shot creation but unfortunately not the efficiency to follow as they missed the posts with a multitude of shots with a classy looking Nenagh extending the lead throughout the second quarter before Paddy ended the scoring drought with a free before a big talking point of the half just before the whistle as a Borris man was sent off via the umpires, the half time whistle soon following with Nenagh leading 1-12 to 7 points and Borris having it all to do in the second half.
Borris came out with the desperation required as Evan Ryan replaced Razuk Atik in the middle third. Sam Patton intercepted an attempted break away and showed excellent pace and a cool head to finish to the back of the net to breathe life into the comeback and a 4 point deficit after Lar Stapleton backed up the goal with a long range shot. Nenagh didn’t let the mistakes deter them as they restored their six point lead before corner forward Darragh Chute showed class in a short period with a great goal and a point soon after as Borris were within touching distance for the first time in a long time but Nenagh responded well with a 1-1 surge themselves to snuff out the Borris resistance. Tom Delaney stepped up with a point as Borris showed great heart down a man but Nenagh scored the game ending 3rd goal soon after and despite another Chute point, Borris were trailing 3-16 to 2-12 after 44 minutes. The game fell into a lull and a feeling of inevitability thereafter but Borris remained committed to tackles and a goal hungry approach but Nenagh were the ones who scored their 4th near the end of the game with Tom Delaney showed free taking prowess with a 65’ and a free to end Borris’ scoring before the full time whistle arrived and a Nenagh victory on a scoreline of 4-19 to 2-14.
Borris looked threatening in the forward line from a physicality point of view in the 1st half but were dependent on Paddy McCormack for scores, the red card was a big moment in the game but Borris responded extremely well in the 3rd quarter and the work rate of all involved must be commended. Standouts in the forward line were Darragh Chute who showed fantastic finishing ability, physicality for the moment and scoring ability whilst Sam Patton worked tirelessly in the half forward line and got his rewards with an excellent solo goal.
