Woodlands Golf Club: Hole by Hole Description:
Hole 1: Par 4, Index 7, 351 Metres. Tricky opening par 4 with water right and OB left, however off the new tee box a well struck drive can clear these. Fairway bunkers in play for the longer hitters, a short to medium iron to probably the most difficult approach shot on the course, bunker on the right and one also on the left with a large drop off to a deceiving green in length from front to back. Par here will be good!
Hole 2: Par 4, Index 15, 317 Metres. Short hole with a lake on the left. Fairway bunker on the right is to be avoided. A long iron or rescue just short of the bunker is a smart shot. However a good drive down the left opens up the green leaving you no more than a short iron or wedge but be precise as OB cuts in right and over the back of this green.
Hole 3: Par 3, Index 11, 146 Metres. Tough par 3 with a plateau green which can be difficult to find. Trust the distance and check wind, over the back here and you will be fighting for a par.
Hole 4: Par 4, Index 9, 355 Metres. A new tee box lengthening this hole has made the tee shot interesting. This is a slicer’s nightmare. The safe line is just right of the fairway bunker, however a good drive cutting the corner can leave a short to medium iron to a green which slopes from right to left.
Hole 5: Par 4, Index 3, 353 Metres. Very tough hole here! Drive is vital, the line off the tee is surprisingly the ESB pole. Hazards on the left, OB right and large black popular guard trees just off the fairway is intimidating. The second shot encounters a massive tree on the left which can catch you out. Then to round off a large 2 tiered green. Par here is excellent!
Hole 6: Par 5, Index 13, 467 Metres. First of the Par 5′s. Straight hole with a ditch running all the way down the left hand side. The majority of people will bail out right but trees are lurking. Even with a wild drive a good second shot will leave you no more than a wedge or short iron, avoid the lake and you should be rewarded with your par.
Hole 7: Par 4, Index 1, 381 Metres. Very long hole where a good drive is vital, second shot more than likely a long iron always plays longer than it looks so an extra club is advised. Greenside bunkers and a tricky green to finish. 5 is not a bad score here.
Hole 8: Par 3, Index 17, 142 Metres. Short straight forward hole. Bunkers are not as close to the green as they seem. Decent chance of a par here or possible birdie but treat the green with respect it looks innocent but putts are not easily holed here.
Hole 9: Par 4, Index 5, 361 Metres. Good testing hole to finish the front 9. Generous driving hole down the left opens up the green. If you can reach the lake on the right maybe a fairway wood lay up is the play. Approach shot here requires your attention. Three greenside bunkers and a multi tiered undulating green makes life tough. Par this and you’re playing well.
Hole 10: Par 5, Index 10, 463 Metres. Lovely opening hole to the back 9. A dogleg par 5 where the drive is important. OB the whole way down the left and trees right makes a tight driving hole. A smart second shot to just before the dip in the fairway will leave you a little over 100 yards. The most difficult green on the course awaits. You have to leave yourself below the hole or a 3 putt is very likely.
Hole 11: Par 4, Index 16, 336 Metres. Short hole here where a par is very much on. A blind tee shot with OB left and trees right should easily be avoided. The approach is downhill to a large 2 tiered green.
Hole 12: Par 3, Index 18, 118 Metres. Good par/birdie chance here. Trust distance, only a short iron for most people. Water is lurking short so make sure your up. Green slops from right to left so best place to miss it is left leaving an up hill chip.
Hole 13: Par 5, Index 14, 480 Metres. Up hill par 5 where strategically placed bunkers will catch your eye. Down the left is a good line for a wood or long iron for the second shot leaving you at the brow of the hill.
The short approach shot down hill to a big green shouldn’t cause any problems good par chance here. Greens runs from right to left!
Hole 14: Par 4, Index 4, 375 Metres. Usually plays into the prevailing wind. The tall xmas tree in the back ground is a great line off the tee. The left hand side is probably the more favorable miss. Make sure the second shot is up and doesn’t find sand. Note pin position as big green from back to front.
Hole 15: Par 4, Index 2, 351 Metres. Very difficult hole! Miss to the right off the tee and you’re in the lap of the gods with a jungle of trees. The shot is down the left which is brave as the OB cuts in. This takes the huge tree out of play. Trying to play over or around it can cause disaster. Undulating green where everything falls to the left. Par here and you’ll be smiling.
Hole 16: Par 3, Index 12, 151 Metres. Signature hole. Beautiful par 3. Be up as water and bunkers shot make par difficult. Extra care is needed as this is an extremely tricky green. Good tee shot needed for par here.
Hole 17: Par 4, Index 6, 345 Metres. Interesting dogleg par 4 here with choices. Longer hitters may try to clear the lake leaving only a wedge. However the safe shot is a drive or fairway wood down the right half. Nothing to severe about the second shot, it plays slightly longer to a green that slops from right to left.
Hole 18: Par 4, Index 8, 385 Metres. Good testing finishing hole! The best place to miss is the left if any, the trees on the right can leave you blocked out. A drive up over the hill leaves a medium or long iron to a big green. Try to avoid the bunkers. Par here might win you the money, if so go in and try the Guinness I believe it’s great!
