Cobh GAA Club has a proud and unique past and faces the future with a positive and confident outlook. In the early 1960’s the club played hurling and football in the Paddock in Newtown which is now the Cobh Pirates rugby pitch. Cobh played some memorable matches in this field and defeated St Finbarrs, Glen Rovers and Sars while playing in the Senior League Hurling competitions. Cobh also played Senior Football in the Kelleher Shield League and acquitted themselves well.
Pairc Ui Chonaill pitch was opened in 1964 by GAA President Pat Fanning, where Cork played Tipperary.
Forty-three years on in 2007 Cobh Club has two playing pitches, dressing rooms and a ball alley along with a bar and pavilion. On the playing field the Club plays Intermediate Hurling in the Cork County league and championship and Junior Football in East Cork.
Cobh has no players from the Army or Guards and very few from the Navy unlike former years. The closure of the dockyard, Irish Steel and IFI has reduced the panel of players
available to the club. Since shift work in the various factories around Cork Harbour is the only type of employment now for most players, it does not help training. However the present adult teams have accepted that improvement comes from practise and from self belief.
Best of luck for 2007 to our hurlers and footballers.
